Deck & Patio Staining, Painting & Refinishing
Extend the life of wood decks and outdoor surfaces with proper cleaning, sealing, and the right product for the substrate.
Overview
Deck refinishing done at the right time of year.
Wood decks in northern Illinois take a beating. UV, freeze-thaw, rain, snow, foot traffic, and the planters you forgot to move all chew through deck finishes. A properly refinished deck looks like new for 2–4 years; one that was rushed or done over a damp board peels in months.
We refinish decks the way they should be done: clean the boards, brighten the wood, sand any splintered or peeling areas, replace any failed deck boards, and apply a penetrating stain or a film-forming deck paint depending on what you want.
Our Process
Clean, sand, stain — patiently.
Every deck project starts with a pressure wash and a wood brightener treatment. The brightener neutralizes weathering and opens the grain so the new stain absorbs evenly.
Then we sand. Soft spots, splinters, and old peeling stain get sanded down. We check every board, replace anything that's failed structurally, and clean the dust off before any product touches the wood.
Stain or paint goes on when the wood is dry — usually 48–72 hours after the wash, depending on weather. Penetrating stains get one or two coats brushed in by hand; film-forming products get two coats with proper recoat windows.
What's Included
What deck refinishing includes.
Deck projects are quoted by square footage with cleaning, sanding, repairs, and finish broken out separately.
Pressure Wash & Brightener
Full deck wash plus wood brightener to neutralize weathering and prep the grain for new stain.
Sanding & Spot Board Replacement
Splinters and soft spots sanded smooth; deck boards that have failed are replaced before staining.
Hand-Applied Stain or Paint
Brushed-in penetrating stain or rolled deck paint applied at the right temperature and humidity window.
Railing & Trim Detail
Railings, balusters, and trim refinished as part of the project, not as a surprise add-on.
Materials & Finishes
Deck stains and coatings we use.
For penetrating stains we work with Sikkens, Cabot Australian Timber Oil, and TWP — products that soak into the wood and weather without peeling.
For film-forming deck restoration coatings (for older decks that can't take stain anymore) we use Behr DeckOver and Olympic Rescue It, applied with proper prep.
All sealers and stains are weather-rated for northern Illinois and applied in the May-through-October window when temperatures and humidity are workable.

Why Pristine
Why decks we refinish hold up.
Wash and brighten, every time.
Skipping the brightener step is why so many deck refinishes don't last. We never skip it.
Right product for the wood's age.
New cedar takes a penetrating stain. Old worn deck boards need a film-forming coating. We spec to the actual wood.
Dry wood, right window.
We don't stain over damp wood, in direct sun, or on cold mornings — that's how finish fails.
Timeline & Planning
Deck project timing.
Most residential decks run three to five days total — including the dry time between washing and staining. We schedule decks May through September when conditions are ideal.
